Reflection on E-portfolio Creation Module
E-portfolio is a digital collection of a person’s work, achievements and reflections that showcases their skills and experiences. The purpose of an e-portfolio is to showcase a person’s achievement, encourage personal growth and facilitate career and professional development. For us, the purpose of creating our own e-portfolio is to showcase modules and serve as a record for the progress we’ve made in the semester. Personally, I find it interesting in creating our own e-portfolio as it provides valuable opportunities for us to have a hand-on experience to create a website all by ourselves. While there are benefits for creating e-portfolio, I also encounter challenges in terms of technical skills and organization.
Speaking of the benefits for creating e-portfolio, I think it fosters me to think about the projects that I’ve done before and what I can put on e-portfolio to enhance my competence. In other words, e-portfolio helps me in recognizing my own progress and achievements, and also provides a platform to showcase my strengths. As e-portfolio have a comment box for people to leave comments, I think it also provides areas for improvement. I will know how I can improve by reviewing the comments. Apart from that, e-portfolio can enhance our creativity and ownership as well. It provides a platform to express personal opinions and allows us to be creative so that we can customize our own e-portfolio.
If I had a chance to apply e-portfolio into teaching, I would consider to use it for intermediate students, especially who are in their twelfth grade in high school. I think it is suitable for students at this age as they are about to prepare the materials for entering college. An e-portfolio could be a plus and a chance for them to showcase their works that they’ve done in the past three years in high school. By creating their own e-portfolio and the website, it can also help to enhance students’ English proficiency in the sense that they will need to think about how to structure, organize and categorize their ideas clearly for people to review. In terms of the challenges I encounter, it is definitely technical difficulties. I was struggling when not being able to put my reflection on the website under the right category. Whenever I put it on, it appears on all categories instead of showing in the place where I just put on. I have tried many times, but it ends up showing in the wrong place. It’s quite annoying for not being able to get it right, so I decide to change a template. After changing to another template, the problem is solved. Therefore, I think troubleshooting is really an issue for students who are not similar with it. It indeed takes time for students to learn this new tool and be similar with.
To sum up, I think there are still many benefits for creating an e-portfolio as it not only boosts students’ structuring and organizing ability, but also helps to improve their digital skills. Students gain experiences with online tools and digital content creation. Creating our own website also highlights the importance of planning as we will need to think about the works to put on. Besides, aesthetic is involved as well in order to make the website more attracting. In the future, I will still use and keep updating my e-portfolio.
