Reflection on Digital Storytelling Module
Working on this digital storytelling module with my partner allows me to creatively explore digital storytelling. The main theme of our story is to help children finding their true self and building their identity. Through creating this digital story, I understand the importance of collaboration and learn to make good use of AI. Next, I will delve into talking about what I’ve learned from collaborating, how digital tools help us with the module, and lastly the overall reflection that I learned from digital storytelling module.
In terms of collaboration for working on the module, we split the work half for each other. As me and partner plan to draw the characters by ourselves, I am responsible for drawing the first half of the story as well as the story plot itself. And my partner takes over the second half of the story. Apart from that, I am in charge of making the preface and contents pages of the story, while my partner helps to put on the author biography and the end page. For the plot of the story, my partner and I come up with the story by ourselves and think that it is a suitable theme for children to read. From this collaboration experience, I find that cooperating indeed plays an important role in the project as it helps to facilitate the completion of the project and it really saves time. I think that we do not encounter any challenge in terms of working as a pair, both of us divide our work evenly and always discuss to try to reach a consensus for the project.
For the use of digital tool, we do not use ChatGPT for the story plot, while we ask ChatGPT for help for understanding the story mountain, which means the five stages of our story. Then, the story mountain helps me to make the table of contents of the story. For making the book more beautiful, I think that the built-in icons and images of Book Creator helps a lot. Although the free version of Book Creator does not contain many icons, it is still enough for making a lovely story book. In addition, I am most proud of using our own voice as the narration of the story since it makes the storybook more unique. I think the technical challenge I encounter is that as a group project we are unable to work on the story in one account, which means we have to work by ourselves and then combine it together. It is really not convenient for a pair work. We then resolve it by discussing first before start working on it.
For me, I think the most meaningful part of this project is writing a story proposal. Thinking about the story plot helps me to think about what I want to teach children as well as thinking about the theme that is suitable for children and draw their attention. This project influences my thinking as a future language teacher in a way that it prompts me to think about what I intend to teach and thus how it can reflect on the lesson plan. Overall, I believe the digital storytelling module helps me not only in learning digital tools as a way to teach, but also assists me in developing critical thinking ability.
