Reflection on Video Dubbing Module

     Completing the video dubbing module is an engaging experience during my English learning process. Unlike traditional speaking tasks, dubbing not only need to focus on pronunciation and fluency but also on emotions and expression. When I first learn about dubbing, I am curious about how it’s going to work as I’ve never dubbed before. Through this reflection, I will share how the dubbing task helps improve my language skills, how collaboration plays a role in my development, the challenges I faced, and how this experience has influenced my thoughts on using dubbing in my future teaching. 

     First of all, through the process of making this video dubbing module, I think it helps me improve my English fluency. Since the character I dub will be angry in the end of the video, I need to pretend to be furious in order to match the emotions. Usually, when someone is angry, they tend to speak very fast. In this case, in order to fully express the anger, I have tried many times to make my voice sound angry and also speak in a really fast speed at the same time. Therefore, this negative emotion, angry, helps me improve my fluency throughout this module. In addition, to make the intonation sounds more like the character, I also need to practice it several times. I then find out where to stress and be able to dub it more fluently. Secondly, collaboration with my group members plays a vital role in this video dubbing module. Collaborating not only helps us to divide the work evenly but also facilitates us to support each other during dubbing. Apart from that, peer feedback also helps us to see how we can improve better in terms of speaking like the character in the video. Thirdly, I think the biggest changes I observe myself in speaking is the part of emotion expression. In the very beginning, I find it hard to fully express the emotion required in the video. It is not only because I’m not used to speaking in a loud voice but I’m also afraid of making large sounds and thus affect others. However, during the presentation, I find it easier to express my emotion as there’s no need to worry about affecting someone. Thus, I think my speaking performance indeed improves from Phase 1 to presentation. And I think the most challenging phase is Phase 4, soundtrack creation. As I mentioned earlier, I find it difficult to pretend being angry. Through continuous practicing, I then overcome it. In addition, I also think that a suitable dubbing environment is also important during the dubbing process. By immersing ourselves in a relaxing place, it will be easier to show our emotions. Next, I think ChatGPT supports our learning process in this module in terms of subtitle translation. ChatGPT helps us checking if there’s any grammatical errors in all the subtitle and it also provides suggestions for better version of translation. In this sense, ChatGPT does serve as an assistant for completing this video dubbing. 

     Finally, I think I would consider using dubbing in my future teaching as dubbing can indeed improve both students’ speaking ability and their translation skills. Moreover, dubbing makes learning English more engaging. And it is also a unique way to practice speaking. However, before implementing video dubbing project, I think there are some points that should take into consideration. As video dubbing requires more time on dubbing itself and video editing. Therefore, I will need to make sure whether students have enough time for finishing it. Furthermore, students’ English proficiency level should take into consideration as it might be too hard for some low achievers. For me, if I’m going to use dubbing for teaching, I might use short clips and adjust difficulty for different students’ proficiency level so that students won’t feel overwhelmed. To conclude, the video dubbing module has been a valuable experience that helps me grow both linguistically and personally. It strengthens my speaking skills, especially fluency and boosts my confidence in using English more naturally. Working closely with my group members and using tools like ChatGPT add extra support and make the learning process more effective. Most importantly, this experience has inspired me to consider using dubbing as a creative and engaging method in my future English teaching to motivate students and enhance their speaking abilities.
